Modern Love & Millennial Marriage: 3 Wedding Trends We’re Seeing in 2020

David Bowie might have been ahead of his time when he sang about ‘Modern Love’; however, in this day and age of social distancing, “getting to the church on time” may be replaced by an elopement to a secluded destination; city hall; or rustic-chic barn on time.
Millennials are seeking newer, more economical and forward-thinking ways of tying-the-knot and redefining what ‘modern love’ really is. Read on to learn 3 ways the next generation is pushing the envelope and changing how we think about marriage!

  • ELOPEMENTS
  • In light of our society's current need for social distancing and in response to the state of our economy, we’ve seen an astounding rise in elopements. I personally love the magic and intimacy of it! Couples and Blush Brides have been so creative, as you can see in  Jessica & Martin’s gorgeous elopement in Big Sur.
With just the couple present, people are really honing in on what a marriage is all about: “the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship.” Two people committing to each other - it’s as simple (and romantic!) as that.
Gone are the days of lavish, over-the-top affairs with hoards of guests (half of which we barely know! Sorry, Aunt Ida!). Instead, we’re seeing a trend of micro-weddings (5-10 guests max) or romantic elopements (just the couple) from the comforts of home, to a rustic forest or a lakeside retreat.
If you’re planning an elopement, consider a spot that is meaningful for you as a couple. It will also help if it’s a place with strong Wifi, as you might consider including your loved ones digitally! Check out the hashtag #ZoomWeddings on Instagram for inspo :)

  • SLOW FASHION
  • With a growing concern for the environment, and wanting to support small business during these difficult times, brides are turning to slow fashion. Not to mention, while weddings are getting smaller in size, so are the expenses. There’s no need to dish-out the big bucks on your dream dress either. Without compromising quality, brides are looking to budget-friendly and fashion-forward options. I’ve noticed it particularly with this dress, which has been a bride favorite this year.
We’re also seeing a rise in accessorizing with vintage or “upcycled” pieces like 1950’s ornate headbands found from your local antique store, your grandmother's favorite hand-beaded handbag, or your mom’s pearlescent pumps. Even Princess Beatrice borrowed her grandmother’s tiara to wear to her own socially distanced wedding! Brides are really taking to heart “something old” and “something borrowed”. I love that people are recycling and reusing old pieces that have such deep history and meaning, rather than mass-produced accessories.

  • ETHICAL ENGAGEMENT
  • Diamonds may be forever, but so are diamond alternatives like gemstones and lab grown diamonds. Plus you can rest easy knowing that your most prized possession was made safely and ethically - which is reason enough to say “I Do!”. Available in brilliant and unique colors and stunning, shimmering cuts, gemstones and lab diamonds offer an element of distinction to classic engagement rings (you’ll get a lot more interest from friends and family!) and are also far more economic! What’s not to love!?
For the groom, gold and silver bands will always have their place, but why not try for something a little edgier - like tungsten or titanium, or oxidized copper? Sophisticated in their appearance, these metals will stand the test of time, just like your marriage! I’m a personal fan of Gilleri Jewel
Say what you will about millennials and GenZ, these younger generations are saying “no!” to stuffy, over-priced, over-the-top formal affairs and are redefining the importance and sanctity of marriage. At the end of the day it’s all about the love of two people, committing to a lifetime together and I’m loving this refreshing shift and perspective!
