A BLUSH Bride’s Guide to Marriage over 50
When it comes to love, there are no limits, and in this day-and-age in the light of a global pandemic that’s more prevalent than ever. Priorities have shifted in a major way and we’re getting back to our roots in terms of what really matters in this life - LOVE!
Puppy Love is no longer just for the youth, we’re seeing a huge trend of couples 50 and over tying the knot - whether that’s for the first time (...or second or third) or renewing their vows. It’s beautiful to see that love has no boundaries and truly conquers all. In this article we discuss how to prep and plan for saying ‘I Do’ for those that are 50 and up!

Location, Location, Location.
Whether you’ve found your soulmate later in life, remarrying or renewing your vows with your beloved, location will play a huge part in your nuptials. There really are no limits, but here at BLUSH we love the idea of a more intimate and special locale - something that’s steeped in meaning. Maybe you met your sweetheart at a local cafe like Andrew and Chloe or at a nearby park: why not host a small gathering to celebrate your love where it all started!? We’re also all for romantic elopements (read our article on eloping here for more tips!) -- whether that’s your local City Hall (for those that are more traditional) or just you and your honey by the sea or deep in the forest. Pick a place that exudes romance and sets the perfect backdrop for stunning photos that you can cherish for many more years to come!

How to dress? Try something alternative.
Take this opportunity to have a little bit of fun with your fashion choice! If you’re saying ‘I Do’ for the first time or remarrying, try opting for a champagne or blush shade… or for the edgier bride dare to be different in a bordeaux or even black dress (see our article here on black wedding attire) in either a stunning vintage lace, tulle or even velvet. You don’t have to be beholden to a classic white gown!
In terms of shape, we’re all for a more modest and sophisticated look like our long sleeved boat neck dress; or for something a little more casual but still effortlessly elegant, we’re also very much into shorter styles like our pink lace long sleeved dress: think Carrie Bradshaw’s elopement look vis a vis the Sex and the City finale! Most importantly, when choosing “the one” (...and we’re not talking about your sweetheart!) make sure it’s something that you are comfortable in, something that feels effortless and undoubtedly YOU.
Accessorize your look.
Another great way to have fun at 50 is with how you accessorize your bridal look. For those that are renewing vows, maybe you’d prefer to have your original wedding dress re-fitted for the big day - but why not shift the look slightly by adding some fun and playful accessories. We love the idea of a cape or cover-up that you can throw over your shoulders, like any of the options from our collection. For jewels, we’re all for a stunning pearl drop earring like this one, which elongates the neck and adds a timeless sophistication, and who doesn’t love that :).
Wedding Party Etiquette
Chances are that if you’re having a wedding later in life, there’s bound to be additional members in your family, like grown children from a previous marriage or maybe even grandchildren!? If that’s the case, be sure to include them in your special day in a way that’s meaningful like including them in your wedding party (even if that’s a more casual elopement). For a Maid of Honor (MOH) or bridesmaid, we love a simple classic look like a cream skirt and top idea, like this one here, something that’s short, sweet and not too flashy. We also can’t get enough of the mismatched bridal party look of having different lengths, shapes and colors of dresses for something truly unique. This is also a great way to ensure your wedding party can choose a gown that feels comfortable for them! For some serious wedding party inspo, take a look at Michael and Larissa’s New Zealand forest fete.

For a flower girl, ethereal and feminine is always the way to go, like this adorable Off-The-Shoulder Ivory Lace & Tulle Midi Girls Gown -- flower crowns are always a MUST for the ultimate “awww!” factor! (... if we do say so ourselves!)
In conclusion, it’s NEVER too late to celebrate love and with this guide you’re well on your way to planning the PERFECT day for you and your betrothed.
We would love to see your very own golden years wedding and would be honored if you would send us some snaps of your special day that we can share with our readers to continue this beautiful message and reminder that: age is nothing but a number and love knows no bounds.
